01 / Bottom Line

Build the Fairdale friction-first, with 2x as the simple default and 3x as the charming deep cut.

The earlier page made 1x the practical default because it was closest to the original Archer spec. That is still the cheapest finish path, but it is no longer the target. Assume friction shifting for front and rear. That makes 2x and 3x easier to tune, but it does not cancel the real fit checks: derailleur capacity, chainline, BB spindle, cable routing, and front derailleur shape still decide what works.

Prove the front-shift path

Confirm the fork/headset safety gate, then check BB shell, crank interface, front derailleur mount/clamp size, cable routing, friction shifter pair, rear wheel, cassette, and chainline.

Reason: friction is forgiving at the lever, not magic at the derailleur.

Recommended buy

New Albion SC-G 42/30

Use the 175mm square-taper double with a matched JIS BB if the measurements work. It keeps the classic steel-bike feel, gives a real low ring, and does not force the whole bike into a new crank ecosystem.

Role: make 2x happen with the least new complexity.

Modern or triple

Sword or GRX 46/30-ish

Pick this if the Fairdale is becoming a bigger drivetrain rebuild. Modern 2x wants crank, BB, and front derailleur agreement. Touring 3x wants the same, plus rear derailleur capacity.

Role: wider options, higher matching burden.

02 / The Buy Gate

Do these checks before the cart gets opened.

This is the part the PDF needed most: a plain go/no-go gate. A 2x or 3x crank choice is only useful after the safety, fit, and friction-shifting questions are answered.

Fork crown race seatRace must sit flat and square. If the seat is cracked, ovalized, deeply gouged, or unstable, stop and solve fork/headset first.
Headset standardConfirm the lower bearing/crown race path. Local notes point to FSA sealed integrated 45/45, likely IS42/30.
BB shell and spindleConfirm 68mm English shell, square-taper or external-bearing path, and whether the hammered spindle is smooth, straight, and play-free.
Front derailleur mountMeasure the seat tube / clamp need and confirm cable routing. A braze-on derailleur may still need a clamp adapter.
Friction shifter pairConfirm front and rear friction control. The left must pull enough cable for double or triple trim; the right must hold position across the chosen cassette and rear derailleur.
Rear wheel and cassettePick the actual rear wheel, then bias toward 11-34 or 11-36. With a 30T inner ring, you do not need to build around the troublesome 11-51.
Crank lengthIf replacing one arm only, match 175mm exactly. If replacing the crankset, 175mm is the stock L/XL target unless fit says otherwise.
Chainline and derailleur matchMatch the front derailleur to the crank's outer ring, tooth gap, chainline, pull direction, and chain width.

The shortlist has three lanes: classic 2x, modern 2x, or old touring 3x.

Keep the original PDF's personality, but make the decision smaller. Friction shifting is assumed for all lanes, so the comparison is about crank fit, front derailleur match, rear capacity, and how much range you actually want.

What happened to 1x and 3x?
Friction shifting works for 2x or 3x. It just changes where the risk lives.

The shifters stop being the compatibility bottleneck. The crank, BB, derailleurs, cage capacity, and chainline become the parts that have to agree.

  • 1x singleFastest way to finish the original-style Archer, but less interesting and more cassette-dependent.
  • 2x doubleThe simple default: useful range, closer rear spacing, and a great match for friction trim.
  • 3x tripleMechanically charming and legitimately useful if you want old touring range. Friction helps, but the crank/FD/RD/BB path still needs to be complete.
04 / Gearing Reality Check

Friction 2x or 3x lets you keep the rear cassette normal and still get the bailout gear.

A 30T inner ring with an 11-36 cassette gets almost the same low gear as a 42T 1x with an 11-51 cassette, but with cleaner rear shifting and tighter useful steps. A touring triple goes lower again if the extra hardware is worth it.

Low gear = easy pedal, slow bike. Small front ring plus big rear cog. This is the hill, headwind, tired-legs gear.
Top gear = hard pedal, fast bike. Big front ring plus small rear cog. This is the downhill or sprint gear.

For 80% city / 20% offroad: 46/30 if you want more pavement speed, 42/30 if you want calmer utility.

Friction for all is the right control assumption. Still skip 53/42. City riding rewards starts, stops, wind, and usable middle gears; offroad rewards low control.

  • Friction for allGood. Use it for front and rear. Just do not let it hide capacity questions: the rear derailleur still has to wrap the chain, and the front derailleur still has to match the rings.
  • 80/20 city/offroadBest fit is 46/30 x 11-36 for a slightly faster all-rounder, or 42/30 x 11-36 for the friendlier city/rough-stuff version.
  • 42/30Best classic square-taper target. Lower top gear, very useful low gear.
  • 46/30Best modern gravel target. Higher top gear, same useful low gear.
  • 3x tripleYes if you want old touring behavior: very low bailout gear, normal cassette, and lots of overlap. Better as a deliberate vintage build than as a quick fix.
  • Triple shapeLook for touring/MTB-ish rings like 46/36/24, 48/36/26, or 44/32/22. A road triple with a giant outer ring repeats the 53/42 problem.
  • 53/42No, unless this is intentionally becoming a road-race oddball. The 42T inner ring only gets down to about 32 gear inches with an 11-36, while a 30T inner gets down around 23.
  • 46/29microSHIFT Sword flavor: a little lower again, but best as a matched system.
